Bajau Indonesia: Bajau atau Sama-Bajau adalah sebuah suku atau etnik yang tidak pernah menetap pada suatu daerah tertentu. Mereka berpindah, dan selalu menjelajah menggunakan perahu pada jangka waktu tertentu. Di Indonesia, Suku Bajau banyak sekali mendiami bagian utara Kalimantan, bagian utara Sulawesi hingga perairan Maluku dan Raja Ampat.
Suku Bajau lebih banyak melakukan aktivitasnya di atas perahu entah untuk tidur, atau berburu hasil laut yang melimpah. Mereka akan menuju daratan hanya untuk menjual hasil laut atau membeli keperluan rumah tangga yang tak bisa dibuat sendiri.

Saat ini suku bajau sudah semakin sedikit akibat modernisasi. Banyak dari para keturunan suku ini memilih menuju daratan dan bekerja di sana. Akhirnya lambat laun tradisi yang sudah dimulai sejak abad ke-16 akan terancam punah. Mari sejenak mengenal Suku Bajau yang dikenal sebagai sea nomaden ini.

Filosofi Nama Sama-Bajau
Sama-Bajau memiliki makna yang sangat kompleks. Nama ini bisa berarti suatu suku asli atau pribumi dan juga berarti suatu bangsa. Mereka bisa disebut dengan Sama, Bajau, atau keduanya. Namun dalam kehidupan sehari-hari suku ini jarang sekali menyebut dirinya sebagai Bajau. Mereka lebih suka menyebut dirinya dengan Sama Dilaut yang memiliki arti Sama di lautan.
Sama memiliki arti berorientasi dengan daratan, artinya suku ini bisa menduduki suatu daratan. Sedangkan Bajau berorientasi pada lautan atau suku ini suka hidup di atas laut. Selain makna di atas, beberapa orang di area Brunei dan Malaysia menyebut Bajau memiliki arti suku yang suka meninggalkan daratan. Selain itu ada makna lain yaitu mencari ikan yang merupakan turunan kata bajaul. Dari uraian di atas dapat disimpulkan jika Sama-Bajau adalah suku yang berada di lautan dan suka mencari ikan.
Asal-usul Suku Bajau
Suku Sama-Bajau atau Bajau sebutan di Indonesia berasal dari Kepulauan Sulu wilayah Filipina. Suku ini masih satu kerabat dengan Suku Moro yang tinggal di sana. Dari wilayah Filipina, suku ini bergerak menuju sebelah utara Kalimantan menuju Brunei, Malaysia, dan juga ke wilayah Indonesia tepatnya di ujung utara Sulawesi. Selama 50 tahun terakhir mereka terus berpindah menuju ke selatan akibat konflik yang terjadi di Pulau Mindanao.

Saat ini ada sekitar 470.000 orang Bajau yang tersebar di Filipina terutama di area Kepuluan Sulu dan Mindanao. Untuk Malaysia mereka banyak tinggal di Sabah. Suku Bajau juga hidup di wilayah Indonesia terutama di Kalimantan sebelah utara dan Sulawesi. Jumlah mereka di Indonesia tidak diketahui secara pasti mengingat seringnya berpindah hingga susah untuk didata. Namun yang jelas jumlah mereka sudah kian menipis.
Bahasa yang Digunakan Suku Bajau
Suku Bajau memiliki setidaknya 10 bahasa yang diturunkan dari bahasa induk Sama-Bajaw. Secara garis besar suku ini banyak menggunakan bahasa Sinama. Namun bahasa ini sering disebut sebagai Bahasa Bajau karena dipakai hampir di semua suku dan turunannya. Bahasa yang dipakai ini cenderung mirip dengan Tagalog karena mereka berasal dari Filipina. Namun suku-suka yang berada di area Malaysia, Brunei, dan Indonesia menggunakan bahasa yang ada campurannya dengan bahasa setempat.

Karena keperluan jual-beli barang, biasanya orang yang ada di Suku bajau bisa lebih dari satu bahasa. Pertama adalah bahasa yang digunakan sehari-hari dan kedua adalah bahasa yang digunakan untuk keperluan bersosialisasi dengan penduduk lokal.
Sekitar tahun 2006 seorang peneliti bernama Robert Blust melakukan penelitian tentang Bahasa Sama-Bajaw. Ternyata bahasa ini juga merupakan bahasa turunan dari Bahasa Barito yang banyak digunakan oleh suku seperti Dayak dan Malagasy. Penelitian ini akhirnya membuahkan sebuah dugaan jika Suku Bajaw sebenarnya adalah suku di Kalimantan yang hijrah ke daerah-daerah Filipina.
Agama Suku Bajau
Secara garis besar, orang-orang yang ada di Suku Bajau banyak menganut Islam. Mereka mempelajari keyakinan ini saat berada di kawasan Malaysia dan juga Brunei. Lambat laun kepercayaan ini menyebar luas hingga akhirnya 95% Suku Bajau menganut Islam meski tidak meninggalkan beberapa kebiasaan di masa lalu saat masih menganut animisme dan dinamisme.

Biasanya dalam setiap kelompok masyarakat selalu ada orang yang dianggap sebagai sesepuh. Ia bisa disebut dengan dukun atau dalam bahasa setempat sering disebut dengan kalamat. Pada Suku Bajau yang muslim, orang dengan predikat ini sering disebut juga dengan wali jin. Ia sering melakukan ritual agar Suku Bajau diberi keselamatan saat berada di lautan dan selalu mendapatkan berkah hasil laut yang melimpah.
Kesenian dan Budaya Suku Bajau
Suku Bajau memiliki beberapa tari tadisional yang banyak dipentaskan saat upacara pernikahan. Selain itu mereka juga menyanyikan banyak sekali lagu yang diturunkan dari satu generasi ke generasi berikutnya. Dalam memainkan lagu mereka menggunakan alat bernama palau (sejenis alat musik tiup), gabbang, dan tagunggo. Lagu-lagu tradisional dari Suku Bajau sekarang sudah nyaris punah karena generasi mudanya lebih suka dengan hal-hal berbau modern seperti internet.

Selain tarian dan juga lagu, Suku Bajau juga dikenal akan budaya berkudanya. Saat berada di daratan, mereka menggunakan kuda sebagai olahraga hingga akhirnya menjadi bagian dari budaya. Biasanya mereka naik kuda dengan memakai kostum tertentu sambil membawa sebuah tombak. Saat ini tradisi ini juga semakin jarang dilakukan oleh generasi muda hingga dikhawatirkan suatu saat akan punah.
