Suku Bajo terkenal sebagai pelaut ulung dan tinggal tersebar di berbagai pelosok Indonesia, dari Sulawesi hingga Papua, dan NTT, Sebagian juga suku ini tersebar di Filipina dan Malaysia.
Sebagian besar ada di perairan Kalimantan Selatan, Sulawesi Tenggara, Sulawesi Selatan, Sulawesi Utara, Gorontalo, Maluku, Nusa Tenggara (Lombok, Flores, Sumba, Sumbawa), Jambi, Jawa timur, Kalimantan selatan, kalimantan timur, kalimantan barat dan Riau.
Dari banyaknya tempat yang pernah mereka tinggali, dapat disimpulkan bahwa Suku Bajo memang dulunya hidup dengan cara nomaden. Itulah mengapa mereka tersebar di beberapa daerah di Indonesia bahkan sampai Malaysia dan Filipina.
Salah satu kehidupan Suku Bajo yang cukup tersorot adalah Suku Bajo yang tinggal di kawasan Kabupaten Wakatobi. Beberapa desa yang dihuni oleh Suku Bajo di Wakatobi yaitu Desa Bajo Mola, Desa Bajo Mantigola dan Desa Bajo Sampela.
Sudah banyak wisatawan lokal & mancanegara yang ramai mengunjungi desa-desa tersebut untuk melihat & berkenalan langsung dengan Suku Bajo. Rumah-rumah seperti tertancap di laut, rapi dan memanjang menyusuri pantai. Sungguh, pemandangan yang menjadi ciri khas dari desa-desa ini.
Masyarakat Suku Bajo tinggal di dalam Rumah Tanjap yang dibangun di atas timbunan karang dan terhubung dengan jembatan yang terbuat dari kayu. Jembatan ini menjadi penghubung mereka ke daratan.
Ini yang membuat mereka seakan terasing dari masyarakat pulau yang berada di daratan. Namun, kehidupan mereka tetap harmonis dan bersih.
