Upacara silat Kon Tau, berupa pemberian tombak. Tradisi tersebut biasa dilakukan saat ada tamu agung seperti kunjungan pejabat.
Meskipun letak geografis Kecamatan/Kepulauan Sapeken termasuk bagian Kabupaten Sumenep, namun mayoritas penghuninya berasal dari suku Bajoe atau disebut juga suku Same. Bahkan, suku Bajoe diklaim sebagai suku yang paling awal mendiami Sapeken.
Meskipun masih belum ditemukan bukti autentiknya, kami yakin jika suku Bajoe me-rupakan suku yang pertama kalinya berada di Pulau Sapeken. Karena dilihat ada kehidupan, maka kemudian banyak suku menyusulnya, seperti suku Makassar, Mandar, Bugis, maupun suku Madura sendiri,” kata sesepuh suku Bajoe H. Moh. Ali Daeng Sandre’.
Keyakinannya itu berdasarkan banyaknya tradisi dan budaya suku Bajoe yang mewarnai kehidupan mayoritas masyarakat Sapeken. Ia mencontohkan bahasa sehari-hari yang digunakan masyarakat. Bahasa sehari-harinya adalah bahasa Bajoe. Bahkan, sangat sedikit warga yang mengerti bahasa Madura,” terangnya.
Selain itu, eksisnya pencak silat Kon Tau, pemberian bujak (tombak) yang dilakukan setiap ada hajatan, pesta perkawinan, penyambutan tamu terhormat, dan acara khitanan. Budaya itu simbol pertahanan semangat patriotisme seperti yang diajarkan oleh nenek moyang mereka tempo dulu.
“Budaya pemberian bujak hingga saat ini masih terus dilestarikan. Bahkan kalau ada pesta perkawinan, manten laki-laki diarak dari rumahnya dengan membawa tombak. Kemudian manten perempuan mengutus seseorang untuk menerimanya. Itu dilakukan sesampainya manten laki-laki,” terangnya.
Dikatakan, suku Bajoe me-rupakan salah satu suku yang berasal dari negara tetangga. Ada yang mengatakan suku Bajoe berasal dari Johor, Malaysia, dan pula ada yang mengatakan berasal dari Philipina. Suku tersebut diperkirakan masuk ke Sapeken pada tahun 1925.
Adapun ciri-ciri masyarakat Suku Bajoe, pola kehidupannya lebih senang tinggal di perairan dibandingkan di daerah daratan. “Suku Bajoe ini biasanya sekali berangkat berdakwah, sulit yang akan kembali meskipun lama berada di tengah laut. Karena mereka yakin di laut pasti ada sumber kehidupan. Makanya, banyak suku Bajoe yang lebih senang tinggal di perairan, seperti di Pulau Sapeken ini,” terangnya.
Di Kepulauan Sapeken banyak rumah yang berjejer di dekat perairan. Bahkan, terdapat beberapa rumah yang dibangun di atas laut, atau yang dikenal dengan rumah apung. Meskipun di Kepulauan Sapeken terdapat banyak suku, kehidupan sehari-harinya tetap rukun dan tentram. Hal itu selaras dengan nama suku Same yang mempunyai arti kebersamaan.
“Kalau di sini suku Bajoe atau suku Same sejak tahun 80-an sudah nyaris tenggelam akibat tergerus modernisasi. Tapi, kami tetap akan mempertahankan, karena suku Bajoe merupakan salah satu suku yang unik dikalangan kancah internasional. Seperti halnya suku Bajoe yang masih murni di daerah Sulawesi,” ungkapnya.
Bupati Sumenep A. Busyro Karim saat mengunjungi daerah tersebut mengatakan, banyaknya suku di Sapeken merupakan salah satu icon terbesar yang tetap dijaga kelestariannya. Dirinya mengimbau agar semua suku tetap rukun dalam menjalani kehidupan sehari-harinya.
“Harus rukun, karena dengan hidup rukun kita bisa memajukan, membangun dan membangkitkan kesejahteraan bersama. Apalagi dalam waktu dekat banyak program peme-rintah yang akan dikucurkan ke desa yang dalam tatanan realisasinya harus dikerjakan secara bersama-sama. Sehingga, penerapannya nanti bisa maksimal,” harapnya.
Untuk diketahui, Kecamatan Sapeken terdiri dari puluhan pulau kecil, salah satunya Pulau Paliat, Sepanjang, Sepangkur, Sadulang, Sitabuk, dan sejumlah pulau kecil lainnya.
Sementara jarak tempuh dari Pelabuhan Kalianget ke Pelabuhan Pulau Sapeken, dalam waktu normal bisa ditempuh selama kurang lebih 18 jam dengan menggunakan tranportasi laut yakni Kapal Layar Motor Perintis (KLMP).
Jika menggunakan kapal cepat jarak tempuh sekitar 4 jam ke Pelabuhan Batu Guluk, Kangean. Dari pelabuhan Batu Guluk ke Pelabuhan Sapeken menggunakan perahu kecil kurang lebih sekitar 2-3 jam perjalanan.
